Nobody can agree on what to call the new tech-enabled glasses hitting the market this year.
Meta calls them AI glasses, Audio Glasses, etc. Snapchat calls them Smart Glasses. Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, camera on the hinge, little speakers by your temples, a voice in your ear that answers when you ask. Google previewed its own version at I/O this year and called it "intelligent eyewear," Gemini in your ear, shipping this fall with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster frames. Even Realities makes a pair with a tiny green display and no camera and calls those smart glasses too. Xreal has the Aura and calls them spatial computing glasses.
So which is it. Smart glasses, AI glasses, audio glasses, AR glasses. The category can't pick a name because it can't pick a body. And the reason that matters is the split hiding underneath all the labels.
There are two kinds of glasses being built right now. One kind puts pixels in front of your eyes. The other kind doesn't.
Everything else is marketing.
The pixel question is the whole question
The industry keeps sorting these devices by brand and price. Wrong axis. Sort them by whether they light up your vision.
On one side you have the display glasses. A heads-up screen floating in the corner of your eye. Turn-by-turn arrows painted on the sidewalk. Your texts hovering over the cereal aisle. This is the future everyone drew in 2013 and it is finally shipping, and it is going to lose the mainstream for a long time.
Displays are heavy. They eat the battery. They cost more. And they do the one thing people already hate their phones for. They put a screen between you and the room you're standing in.
On the other side you have audio glasses. A camera that can see what you see. Open-ear speakers that don't plug your ears. A voice you talk to. No screen. Nothing to look at. You hear the answer, you don't read it. Right now this is the version people actually buy and actually wear, because it does something a phone can't while asking almost nothing of your attention.
Ray-Ban Meta has been shipping this for a while and it's the pair that broke through. Not because Meta out-teched anyone. Because they figured out that the best version of this form factor may be the one you forget you're wearing.
The best ambient user experience is the one you stop noticing
Here is the phrase I keep coming back to. The best ambient user experience is invisible. It sits out of the way until the exact second you need it, does its one thing, and disappears again. It does not demand a glance. It does not blink for attention. It does not overlay a menu on your morning.
Displays fail this test by definition. A display is a request. It wants your eyes. Every pixel it lights is a pixel saying look here, and the whole problem with screens was always that they never stop saying it.
Audio never hits your eyeballs.
Sound fills a room without occupying your hands or your eyes. You can hear something and keep looking, keep being a person in a place. Add a camera that already knows what you're looking at and you don't even have to describe anything. The glasses can just know, and answer, and go quiet.
That combination, a camera that understands your gaze, a voice command, and audio that plays back into the space, with zero pixels, is the most underrated interface being built right now. Everyone's chasing the HUD because it looks like the movies. The winning audio glasses apps are going to come from the pair with nothing to look at.
